What Should I Do If My Tooth Gets Knocked Out?

Dental accidents, such as chipped, broken, or even knocked-out teeth, can often occur from falls, sports injuries, or other sudden impacts. These emergencies can cause pain, lead to infections, and impact your overall oral health. Acting promptly is key to increasing the chances of saving a tooth.

In cases where a tooth is damaged but still in place, a dental crown may be a viable solution. A crown completely covers a tooth to restore its functionality and appearance while also protecting it from further harm. However, if your tooth has been knocked out, you should take the following steps immediately:

  1. Carefully pick up your tooth by the crown and not the root.
  2. If the tooth is dirty, rinse it with water.
  3. If possible, gently place your tooth back in the socket. If the tooth that has been knocked out is your child’s baby tooth, do not try to place it back. This may impact the adult tooth growing in. Instead, take your child to the dentist immediately.
  4. If re-inserting the knocked out tooth is not possible, place it in a bag or container while keeping it moist with milk or saliva. Do not use regular tap water. If saliva is utilized, it should be placed in a separate container rather than temporarily holding the tooth between the gums and cheek since there is a danger of accidentally swallowing it. Storing the tooth in milk is often the best option.
  5. Visit an emergency dentist as soon as possible, preferably within 30 minutes.

At Sutra Dental Spa, cosmetic dentist Jimmy Wu, DDS is experienced at addressing knocked-out teeth and other dental emergencies. If your tooth has been fully dislodged and cannot be saved, dental implants and dental bridges may be appropriate options. These restorative methods can help improve both the functionality and aesthetics of your smile.
