What is the Difference Between Dental Crowns and Bridges?

Dental crowns and bridges are fundamental components of restorative dentistry, each serving unique purposes. At Sutra Dental Spa, cosmetic dentist Jimmy Wu, DDS offers both treatments to help repair and restore the aesthetics of a patient’s smile, as well as to maintain strong oral health and function. While both treatments can be effective at addressing concerns such as decay, damage, and gaps left by missing teeth, one may be more beneficial than the other for a patient’s specific needs and goals.

Below, Dr. Wu explores the differences between dental crowns and bridges, as well as details about both procedures.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are custom-fitted restorations placed over teeth that are damaged, decayed, or aesthetically compromised. They are designed to restore the tooth’s shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns can be made from various materials, commonly porcelain and ceramic, and can help protect the tooth from further damage while maintaining a natural look and feel. In addition to their ability to restore existing teeth, crowns are often used to top dental implants. With CEREC® technology, crowns can often be created and placed within the same day.

Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth and “bridge” that gap. Anchored by crowns fitted onto the adjacent natural teeth or dental implants, bridges can not only restore the appearance of a full smile, but also help maintain facial structure, prevent remaining teeth from shifting, and distribute bite forces evenly. Materials for bridges typically match the color and strength of natural teeth. For many patients, this procedure can also be completed with state-of-the-art CEREC® technology for optimal convenience.

The decision on which treatment to pursue will ultimately be determined by a patient’s personal needs and current dental condition. Those dealing with decayed or damaged teeth may benefit more from a dental crown procedure, whereas individuals with multiple missing teeth may be a better fit for a bridge.
